Abstract
Software Development, at rapid speed is the key for the success of the organization. As testing consumes around 60% of the typical development effort, an effective testing and test framework would not only enable the organization to be in first in market and also be best in market. After using TTCN-2 for many years and pilot of TTCN-3, the technology team at Motorola India (an SEI certified CMMI organization), has found that the testing strategy with TTCN-3 has the potential of unifying the testing effort and enable the organization to cope-up with the demands of the customers.
With the directions from the senior management of the organization, developed a strategy to train engineers in using the technology, development of the frameworks with the objective of reuse across various domains, identification of further automation opportunities and induct the technology across various domains. After such focus, the results have been found to be very good in terms of improvements in Cycle Time, Productivity, Quality, Coverage of the System Under Test (SUT) and also the Quality of the Test System (TS). We have faced many road-blocks from the project teams, project management and technology itself during the course induction and usage. Though the technology is positioned as the general purpose, we have found many issues when the technology is tried for unit testing, CLI applications testing and GUI applications testing.
The induction and people related issues have been addressed, with success stories from CDMA, Telemetry and WiMAX domains. The some issues like message generation, encoder/decoders have been addressed with automation tools. The training requirement is addressed in phases based on the project nature.
The paper outlines our experiences in using TTCN-3, details on training and other support models and why Motorola India did chose TTCN-3. The paper also illustrates various people, technology and tool related issues during the course of usage along with few insights into future directions and key lessons learned.
