Abstract
The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is a standardised Next Generation Networking (NGN) architecture allowing the smooth convergence of mobile and fixed telecommunication, internet and multimedia services. It uses a Voice-over-IP (VoIP) implementation based on a 3GPP standardized implementation of SIP, and runs over the standard Internet Protocol (IP).
Recently, a performance benchmark standard introducing a common basis for benchmarking the performance of IMS/SIP implementations has been approved by ETSI TISPAN working group 6. This new benchmarking standard makes the benchmarking results comparable, which is an important step for taking decisions on the deployment of IMS systems. The primary goal of the standard is to define a set of test cases that can be applied to an IMS SUT in order to evaluate its performance. The benchmark is defined for the control plane of an IMS network, which consists of the x-CSCF, HSS, and SLF components, the links over which they perform signalling, and the database transactions required to perform these functions.
In the IMS Benchmarking project, Intel and FOKUS developed the first implementation of the TISPAN IMS benchmark as well as the IMS core that has been released as open source last year. The TTCN-3 technology was selected for specifying the benchmark tests. This presentation describes how the benchmarking methodology was conceived with TTCN-3. The implementation simulates a traffic mix of several IMS scenarios (e.g. messaging, voice call, registration). The benchmarking procedure is controlled by parameters such as parallel number of users, call arrival rate (e.g. poisson) or transactions per second. At the end of the benchmark execution, the benchmark tool generates a report containing linear or histogram graphs (e.g. response delays, error rate, calls per second).
The benchmark presentation provides a detailed description of the implementation and our lessons learned in realizing an adequate TTCN-3 benchmarking system.
